On the night of September 10, 2023, Storm Daniel broke two dams above the city of Derna in eastern Libya. The water swept whole neighborhoods into the sea. Thousands of people died, and many families still do not know where their loved ones are.

What happened
Libya Floods
Storm Daniel was a strong storm that formed over the Mediterranean Sea. After it flooded Greece, it moved across the sea to Libya. Heavy rain filled the Wadi Derna valley. Two old dams above the city gave way, and the water rushed through Derna at night while most people were asleep. At least 5,923 deaths have been confirmed, and some estimates are much higher. Thousands of people are still missing. About 46,000 people lost their homes, including more than 16,000 children. In Derna, 891 buildings were destroyed, 11 bridges fell, and much of the water system stopped working. In the first days, many victims were buried in mass graves before they could be named. Families gave DNA samples in the hope of finding their relatives later. A year after the flood, about 30,000 people were still displaced, and many did not know if they could ever go back home. The world responded. The United Nations asked for $71.4 million to help 250,000 people, and the appeal was fully funded. Eastern Libya’s parliament also set aside about $2 billion for rebuilding. But recovery is slow, and many survivors still need help with housing, health care, and coping with trauma.
